Students will learn to analyze, criticize, and synthesize academic literature and will consider the place of theory in academics and in practice.

Advertising and Public Relations Research

This course provides a philosophical, historical, and practical overview of advertising primarily in the United States. Stress is placed on conceptual understanding of theory and history in American and international contexts, and applications through specific tools and techniques.

Audiences at the Margins

This class takes a critical cultural approach to examining audiences, fans, and popular culture, with a particular emphasis of those on the margins as they relate to gender, sexuality, and race. We will explore ways in which media use and identity politics are forms of audience labor that allow consumers to reconfigure media to suit individual needs.

Integrated Advertising and PR Campaigns

The Integrated ADPR Campaigns are the capstone courses requiring knowledge acquired and skills honed in all previous major courses. Students in this course will work in teams to conduct audience research, create an integrated communication campaign, prepare a comprehensive communication campaign book, and make a formal presentation to the client.

PR Ethics, Diverse Cultures, and Cross-Cultural Leadership

Examines the intersection of public relations ethics in communicating with domestic and global multicultural publics. Case studies and theory are applied to contemporary situations exploring how economics and politics affect issues of inclusion, corporate purpose, communication, and leadership across cultures. Considerations for avoiding marginalization are analyzed.

Public Relations Management

PR Research Insights and Analytics

Basic social science research methods course. The goal is to provide a critical framework for evaluating social science research and experience conducting ADPR research. Students will learn how to select an appropriate research technique, conduct and supervise research, analyze and interpret data, and write research reports.

News Reporting and Writing Across Platforms

Students will report, write, and edit a variety of journalistic story types that are appropriate for delivery in multiple platforms and that adhere to professional and ethical standards of journalism.

Foundations of Graphic Communication

Students learn to analyze and use the principles of design, typography, layout, color theory, and concept development. Students gain the skills to design messages for particular audiences and to prepare designs correctly for print, digital, video, and social environments. Adobe Creative software is used to produce work for student portfolios.

Political Communication

Introduces the student to political communication from a public relations and mass communication theory and research perspective. The student is introduced to a multi-pronged approach to political communication, particularly highlighting fields of public opinion, partisanship, (mis)perceptions of political reality, social media, the presidency, deception, and interpersonal discussion of politics.
